Administrative / biographical background:

The papers came into Lingard Guthrie's possession as follows:

 

His two Lingard Grand-Uncles married the two Dewhurst heiresses, Elizabeth and Sarah, daughters of Thomas Dewhurst of Marple Hall. The papers were found at Marple Hall, formerly the home of the Bradshaws. They then passed into the possession of his cousin Thomas Dewhurst Lingard, son of the above Sarah, and then to the Major himself.
